Summer is still continuing on here with sunny and warm weather. Most of my time is spend paddling and preparing for the trip to Australia. And picking blackberries.
I finished up our training plan for the next 5.5 weeks till "take-off". It's going to be hard. After 2hrs in a K1 yesterday we had a morning and afternoon practise in K1 again today. And my shoulders are still sore from the 3 x 30+ push-ups on Saturday. Tomorrow morning is again K1 time and in the evening we will race our double surfski in Deep Cove. At least tomorrow will end with pizza and beer at the pub - also part of the "masters" training program.
We finalized all our flights and car rentals for Downunder as well. We will get to Sydney on Oct 2nd and stay there for a week or so. I am looking forward to see our new-found Aussie friend Rob (see below) competing in the surf rowing event. We'll be heading out to Penrith - Olympic race course - some time around Oct 9 or 10 and stay there in a cabin with some Aussie friends (John, Gary & Darren - we met in 2005 at the World Masters Games in Edmonton, AB, Canada) as well as Alex & Leah from Revelstoke Canada. Apparently the Canadians are the second biggest group after the Australians to compete in the games. Our races are scheduled for Oct 13 & 14 (marathon K1 and K2 - 21km each) and Oct 16-18 (sprints K1, K2, K4 - 1000, 500 & 200m ). We team up with Mike & Fiona from Regina, Canada for the K4. After 1 day of recovery we are going to start our adventure by flying to Perth and renting a 4WD to see as much or as little of the West Coast as possible in 22 days. From Perth we fly to Brisbane - a city I have mixed memories of (cool Koala Sanctuary, too little time in Lamington NP and food poisoning - the later I intend not to repeat). We'll be renting a car and drive up to Cairns - another 18 days to enjoy the rain forest and the great barrier reef once again (first time for Jeff). From Cairns we fly back to Sydney and then Vancouver to be back in Canada on Dec 2nd - MAYBE.

Didn't you meet the aussies at the Masters in Edmonton in '05? You travel so much, you can't keep them all straight! ;)
I'm a lot envious of your upcoming travels in Australia. Some tips for the east coast: we have good memories of the Atherton Tablelands, not too far from Cairns. We also stayed in a really relaxing place in the rainforest, accessable only by 4WD. The owners picked us up at the bus station. I'll try to find the name of it... And we loved Lennox Head, but that is probably a bit too far south of Brisbane. (Hilarious - I just tried to google the distance between Brisbane and Lennox Head. And google maps did the distance from Brisbane, California. I kid you not, the directions include "Kayak across the pacific ocean and enter Japan. 3,879 miles". Perfect for you guys!).
Okay - I corrected the dates. Funny story about the directions from Brisbane to Lennox Head but I really don't like the big crossings as much. Land in sight all the time is a nice thing when kayaking :-) Thanks, katja
